Former All-Star guard Jameer Nelson, who finished his NBA career with the Detroit Pistons, has quickly worked his way up the Philadelphia 76ers' organization and is set to take on the team's executive vice president of basketball operations role, ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Sunday. Nelson, 44, wrapped up his playing career with the Pistons in 2018 and became the assistant general manager of the 76ers' G League squad, the Delaware Blue Coats, and a scout in 2020. He was promoted to assistant general manager of the 76ers in 2025 and after Daryl Morey's departure this offseason takes on the No. 2 job in the front office behind new president of basketball operations Mike Gansey, previously the general manager of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Nelson was reportedly a finalist for the top job. Nelson's 14-year NBA career included 10 seasons with the Orlando Magic before stints with the Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets and New Orleans Pelicans. The former 20th overall pick in 2004 was dealt to the Pistons on 2018 trade deadline day from the Chicago Bulls - who only had Nelson for a week before trading him - in exchange for center Willie Reed and future second-round draft considerations. He had previously played five seasons under Stan Van Gundy with the Magic, who was serving as Detroit's coach at the time. Nelson would play seven games for the Pistons, averaging 3.7 points and 3.3 assists in his limited appearances. His final NBA game would be on March 13, playing 26 minutes in a 110-79 loss to the Utah Jazz. For his career, Nelson averaged 11.3 points, 5.1 assists and three rebounds on 43.6% shooting from the field and nearly 37% shooting from range across 878 regular-season games. He was a one-time All-Star in 2008-09 but a torn labrum in his right shoulder kept him away from the court for four months and only return to play the final five games of the NBA finals as the Magic lost to the Los Angeles Lakers. He started all 14 postseason games for the 2010 Orlando team that made the Eastern Conference finals.
