The Detroit Pistons opened their doors for a public practice this weekend, offering a glimpse of the 2026-27 squad just days before their preseason opener. The session proceeded without newly re-signed All-Star center Jalen Duren, who inked a five-year, $200 million deal last Thursday.
With Duren ramping up separately, attention shifted to the team's offseason acquisitions. John Collins, projected as the new starting power forward, displayed a fluid three-point shot and explosive athleticism with several windmill dunks. His presence aims to make Detroit's offense more dynamic. Cade Cunningham was the clear focal point, running the fast break, distributing lobs, and hitting triples without missing a beat from his offseason work.
The Pistons' renewed emphasis on perimeter shooting was evident through newcomers Isaiah Joe and Taurean Prince. Both veterans shot over 40% from deep last season and bring playoff experience. They should provide critical spacing and gravity in half-court sets. Rookies Ebuka Okorie and Ugonna Onyenso also participated, with Okorie pushing the pace and Onyenso offering rim protection as a seven-footer.
Before drills intensified, head coach J.B. Bickerstaff addressed the crowd directly. "On behalf of the Detroit Pistons, not just for now but for the past two years, you guys have been amazing," Bickerstaff said. He credited the fans as a huge part of the team's growth and expressed appreciation for their continued support heading into the new year. His comments set a positive tone for the event and the upcoming campaign.
The team's immediate focus is their preseason opener against the Phoenix Suns at Little Caesars Arena in just two days. This game starts a slate of exhibitions that will help finalize rotations and integrate new pieces. The open practice served as a key tune-up. The organization is clearly building on that experience, adding veterans to support Cunningham and Duren for a more competitive season.
