Steve Scalzi was officially introduced as the new head coach of the Detroit Pistons' G League affiliate, the Motor City Cruise, on Thursday.

Scalzi's immediate task is clear: win games for the Cruise and develop talent ready for the NBA. He steps into a role previously held by Jamelle McMillan, who is joining the Chicago Bulls. McMillan set a high bar, leading the Cruise to their first playoff win last season and seeing multiple players earn NBA contracts.

Scalzi views the entire operation as one connected system. "I like to think of every last player on the roster as NBA-ready or NBA potential in an NBA building every day," Scalzi said at his introductory press conference. He emphasized a shared mindset between the Cruise and Pistons staff, build by daily alignment in meetings and philosophy.

Having been a Pistons assistant coach since 2023, Scalzi has witnessed the organization's recent challenges firsthand. Their playoff run ended with consecutive losses.

Scalzi believes the G League environment is unique because it allows for simultaneous development and winning. "That's a bit challenging in the NBA, and we're super proud of it; to do more of that at the G League level is the challenge that's ahead of me," he explained.

Scalzi pointed to recent Cruise standouts as the blueprint. He mentioned Daniss Jenkins, Wendell Moore, Tolu Smith, John Ukomadu, and Chaz Lanier by name. These are the players whose rapid improvement built the program's current reputation.

"The players that I enjoy most are the ones whose improvement rate over time is really, really drastic," Scalzi noted. He plans to use extensive film study of those players to show newcomers how to make incremental progress. The goal is for them to eventually feel at home on an NBA floor.

With over a decade of coaching experience that includes working with stars like Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook in Oklahoma City, Scalzi knows elite talent. But his focus remains on the players already in the building, ready to take the next step.

The standard is already high. McMillan's tenure saw player call-ups and playoff success. Scalzi begins his quest to continue that trend on November 10, when the Cruise open their season on the road against the Cleveland Charge.

For the parent club, integrating this development pipeline is vital. The Pistons' playoff series against Cleveland was a tough lesson, featuring close games like a 113-117 home loss on May 14 and a 107-97 victory on May 7. Building a deeper roster through the G League is a clear priority.

Scalzi's internal promotion ensures philosophical continuity. His "one NBA ecosystem" approach means every drill, every game plan, and every player evaluation in Grand Rapids is done with Detroit in mind. Fans can track the progress of potential future Pistons through the team's official channels and our roster page for roster updates.

The work starts now. Scalzi's mission is to prepare players not only for G League success, but for the speed and physicality of the NBA. His history with the Pistons gives him a direct understanding of exactly what the main club needs from its affiliate.
