The Detroit Pistons are currently facing challenges in their pursuit of veteran NBA sharpshooter Austin Reaves. As one of the top free agents this summer, Reaves has attracted interest from multiple teams, including the Los Angeles Lakers, who are eager to retain their homegrown talent. According to The Athletic’s Dan Woike, the Pistons are grouped with the Brooklyn Nets and Atlanta Hawks as teams capable of making competitive offers for Reaves. However, as July approaches, the Lakers appear increasingly confident in their ability to keep Reaves in Lakerland. In his latest NBA news update, Marc Stein reported that the Lakers are 'widely expected' to re-sign Reaves, citing his strong connection to the team and his promising partnership with Luka Dončić as key factors in their negotiations. The Pistons, while interested, are not expected to be as active in free agency as they are in the trade market. Stein noted that the Pistons are focusing more on potential trades due to looming contract extensions for their own players. Jalen Duren, coming off an All-Star season, and Ausar Thompson, who will become extension eligible in July, are both priorities for the Pistons. Reaves, who had a quiet rookie season averaging 7.3 points with a 31.7% 3PT shooting percentage, has since developed into a consistent scorer, averaging over 20 points per game in the 2024-2025 season while shooting 37.7% from beyond the arc. Despite facing setbacks in the 2025-2026 season, Reaves showcased his talent with a career-best campaign, averaging 23.3 points per game and hitting 36.0% of his three-point attempts.
